Email Archiving vs. Email Management - What's the Difference?

Compliance, litigation, and storage pressures...You know you've got to do something with all that email piling up, but what's the right solution for your company?  Our customers often ask us to help explain the difference between email archiving and email management.  Here's a quick summary...

Email Archiving

Pros: supports compliance and litigation search by archiving all emails over a specified period of time. Helps improve performance by moving emails off expensive email servers.

Cons: archives everything without classification and disposition rules which can cause significant accumulation of email. Growing email quantities may eventually pose cumbersome and expensive challenges in searching and storage, thus increasing corporate risk.

Email Management

Pros: supports compliance and litigation, but also prevents accumulation of email and applies formal records policies to each email. Key is the philosophy that not all emails are considered 'official' records. Using zone management, only official email records are retained and disposed of according to records policies. The end result: less to retain, search, and discover, which in turn reduces storage costs, improves productivity, lowers legal fees, and minimizes corporate risk.
